COMMISSION • FROM THE HEART
From Maya Angelou's Prologue "A Few Words".
There was a generosity about Lanker, which allowed him to give himself to everyone as he was needed.
In 2015, I was commissioned to create the master prints and production files for From the Heart: The Photographs of Brian Lanker, a 224-page retrospective of the Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist's career. Working from drum scans of original negatives, I produced 107 prints that served as plates for both the book and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art exhibition.
The technical process involved matching Brian's printing style—his beautiful expression of contrast and tonal relationships. Each print was calibrated to reproduce faithfully in both the Pentagram-designed book and the museum exhibition while maintaining the integrity of Brian's original vision.
The project was led by Lynda Lanker and Lynne Lamb. Photographers and close friends of Brian, Michael O'Brien and John Loengard made the initial edit, with Barrett Fry and DJ Stout at Pentagram designing the book. Maya Angelou wrote the prologue and curator Roy Flukinger contributed the introduction. The book was published in conjunction with the 2016 museum exhibition.
